about
April 2022 sees the release of ‘Daydreams’, the debut single from Southend on Sea based singer-songwriter, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist Ted Groves. He might just be the Estuary’s DIY answer to Brian Wilson or Geoff Lynne.
After all the emotional turbulence of recent years some of us might need a little musical sunshine in our ears, Ted Groves has that in spades even if it’s sunshine tinged with melancholy. This single introduces an undeniably unique musical talent, that has an uncanny ability to fuse the invention and pop melodies of The Beach Boys, Madness and Ben Folds, with the emotional starkness of ‘Closing Time’ era Tom Waits or early Elliot Smith.
Every instrument on this single is performed by Ted Groves and oozes a life affirming joy and innocence which is in direct opposition to the times we live in.
Ted Groves describes his new single:
“Daydreams is the musical manifestation of all my late-60s and 70s influences. The compositions of artists such as Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren and Emitt Rhodes have been etched into my mind, the influence making its way onto the keys of my newfound writing partner, the piano. This song encapsulates everything that's been prominent in my listening over the past two years. It's an ode if you like, to who I consider the greatest producers and songwriters of their era.”
lyrics
There’s something in your eyes
A kind of flawed disguise
And all the things you do
Are they real to you?
Well you brought me here
So you’re gonna hear
A spoken education on my point of view
So say goodbye to the mess you made
And hello to a brand new day and a brand new you
Don’t matter what you are
If you’re near or far
I know you think it through
When you do what you do
Well I’m on my knees
And I’m begging please
Tell me can I love you ‘cause it feels so right
But maybe I’m the man who can’t
Find a someone to hold and squeeze at night
Stars in the sky at night follow my lead
Fight or flight, wrong or right, that’s all you need
When the daydreams surround me, I can be at peace
When the daydreams surround me, I can be at peace
When the daydreams surround me, I can be at peace
Is this a world I know?
Is this a theatre show?
Are all these colours real?
Is this love I feel?
Well it comes and goes
Something you might know
A thing or two about it, teach me will you
‘Cause I’d do anything to turn it off
When I don’t hear from you I wanna stop
This heart wrenching feeling I only have for you
Before I die, will you see it through?
‘Cause I’ve seen just what I need and it looks like you
